The Unusual Connection Between Cars and Crime

The Drug Ring at Lux Auto Sales

In a bizarre twist, a luxury used car dealership called Lux Auto Sales & Rental in Newport News was found at the center of a massive marijuana trafficking operation. A recent federal jury convicted four men linked to this scheme, which unfolded between 2017 and 2023. The investigation revealed that the dealership did more than just sell high-end vehicles; it also served as the main hub for transporting marijuana across state lines.

How the Operation Worked

The operation utilized couriers who would fly to California with suitcases full of cash. Once there, they collected suitcases stuffed with marijuana, ranging from 20 to 80 pounds. They would return to Virginia with these loadouts, sometimes earning up to $1,500 per trip. This effort resulted in around 1,000 pounds of marijuana making its way into Virginia every week, all funneled through the Lux Auto dealership.

The FBI began their investigation in June 2021 due to substantial tips about illegal activities at Lux Auto. Surveillance showed that marijuana was often concealed within vehicles on the dealership’s lot. In total, over $22 million flowed through bank accounts associated with the operation, resulting in the seizure of about $400,000 in cash and nearly a half-ton of marijuana.

Legal Consequences

Out of the 37 people indicted for their involvement, 31 have already pleaded guilty, with sentences varying from probation to up to 15 years in prison. The four men who took their case to trial were found guilty of various serious charges. One defendant, Cortez Dayshawn Bumphus, has a history of serious crimes, including previous murder charges.

Why This Matters

Despite the recent legalization of small amounts of marijuana for personal use in Virginia, selling it remains a federal crime. This case highlights the risks and legal complexities involved in the drug trade, especially in states where marijuana laws are still evolving.
