For instance, West Palm Beach-Boca Raton records one of the highest averages at $4.497, while places like Pensacola and Panama City have lower averages at $4.057 and $4.095 respectively. However, even these lower prices are well above last year’s rates, where Orlando gas was about $3.08 and Tampa’s was around $3.10 per gallon.
This steep increase has some families reconsidering their summer travel plans. Instead of long drives to out-of-state destinations, many are opting for shorter trips or fewer overnight stays and trying to find activities that won’t break the bank once they arrive at their destinations.
Higher fuel prices also impact workers and small businesses, especially those who rely on driving for their jobs. Contractors, delivery drivers, landscapers, and service technicians find that fuel costs are an unpredictable part of their expenses. For commercial vehicles that use diesel—currently averaging $5.337 per gallon in Florida—those costs can increase significantly and lead to higher prices for goods and services in the market.
According to the latest fuel data from AAA, gasoline demand saw a slight uptick leading up to Memorial Day, even as domestic gasoline supplies fell. Production dipped to an average of 9.3 million barrels per day. While the current Florida average is still beneath its record high—$4.891 for regular gas and $5.820 for diesel—it still presents a significant strain on summer budgets.
The journey from South Florida to Orlando, Tampa to the Panhandle, or even Jacksonville to the Keys will now require more careful planning regarding fuel expenditures. With summer travel just getting started, drivers need to keep an eye on gas prices to make the best choices for their upcoming adventures.
