GCT and Peterbilt: Pioneering Electric Work Trucks in Canada

In an effort to reduce emissions and promote sustainability, the Port of Vancouver terminal operator GCT has been recognized for its commitment to using electric work trucks, specifically Peterbilt’s battery-powered box vans. These trucks, including the 220EV lubrication service truck and the 520EV fuel tanker, are being used to power the largest fleet rollout of any terminal in Canada. By making the switch to electric vehicles, GCT is working towards reducing its absolute emissions by 45% by 2030 and achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

Peterbilt executives have expressed their pride in being part of this innovative project, with national sales manager Martin Blanchet commending GCT and Peterbilt Pacific for their deployment of these electric vocational trucks. The trucks themselves, the 220EV and 520EV, offer high levels of battery capacity and power, with the added benefit of zero tailpipe emissions. This not only helps reduce air pollution but also saves GCT money in the long run.

These electric trucks join the existing fleet of Peterbilt 579EV Class 8 trucks already in use at the Port of Vancouver as part of a data-sharing pilot program. This program aims to measure the real-world benefits of electric drayage trucks on container-hauling routes, providing valuable insights into the advantages of electric vehicles in the transportation industry. Additionally, the program is supported by Canada’s ELECTRA initiative, which offers subsidized lease terms on new electric semi trucks and charging infrastructure for port shipping companies.

Overall, the partnership between GCT and Peterbilt showcases the potential for electric work trucks to make a positive impact on reducing emissions and promoting sustainable practices in the transportation sector. By embracing electric vehicles, companies can not only contribute to a cleaner environment but also benefit from long-term cost savings and operational efficiency.
